Central Missouri Food Bank officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony, opening their new building Thursday.

Food bank officials cut the ribbon Thursday for the new Central Missouri Food Bank location.

The new location, at 1007 Big Bear Blvd., is three times larger than the previous facility and will allow the food bank to better supply those who need its services.

“The current pantry is falling down around us,” former Board of Directors President David Machens said. “This new one is a place you can walk in and feel dignified.”

The Central Missouri Food Bank serves more than 100,000 people who live at or below the poverty level – predominantly the working poor, their children and the elderly. Within hours of putting up the building’s new sign, Columbia residents stopped in the new location to ask when they could start receiving its services.

“The need is there. We are going to see more people and take care of them in this building,” Machens said.

The opening of the new location allowed supporters, employees and volunteers to come together to tour the new facility and to publicly recognize the work that went into its opening.

“I see people with big hearts here,” Executive Director of the Central Missouri Food Bank Executive Director Peggy Kirkpatrick said. “It’s been a long time coming.”
